Pragmatics, Social Communication, & Literacy in African American Children & Adolescents – This poster received a Meritorious Award!

Presenters: Yvette D. Hyter, Kenyatta Rivers, & Glenda DeJarnette

Social pragmatic communication consists of linguistic, nonlinguistic, and cognitive skills. SLPs have minimal knowledge about social pragmatic communication skills in African American English speakers, particularly with regard to speech acts, expository discourse, and social cognition. This poster session presents data on the contributions that these lesser studied areas of social pragmatic communication make to literacy development of African American children.
